About Smooth Sailing Tax

I'm Christopher Davies. I spent years working at sea and I'm a buy-to-let landlord, so I've been on your side of the table: juggling tax returns, rental paperwork and HMRC letters while trying to get on with life.

I started Smooth Sailing Tax to make that easier for people like me: landlords, tradespeople and seafarers who want their tax done properly without the jargon.

Tech-assisted, human-checked. Good software keeps things quick and affordable, but every return and update is checked by me before it goes anywhere. You'll always deal with a real person.

Making Tax Digital: common questions

What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?

It's HMRC's new way of reporting self-employment and property income. Instead of one return a year, you keep digital records and send short updates every quarter, then a final declaration after the year ends.

What counts as "qualifying income"?

Your total gross self-employment turnover plus your gross UK property income, before any expenses are taken off. Salary, pensions and dividends don't count towards it.

When does it start for me?

If your qualifying income is over £50,000 it started on 6 April 2026. Over £30,000, it starts on 6 April 2027. Over £20,000, it starts on 6 April 2028. HMRC looks at your tax return from two years earlier. Try our free checker.

When are the quarterly updates due?

By 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May. The final declaration is due by 31 January after the end of the tax year, the same as the current Self Assessment deadline.

Do I still need to do a Self Assessment return?

For the tax year before you join MTD, yes. After that, the final declaration replaces your usual return.

Can I do it myself?

Yes. You'll need MTD-compatible software and to keep up with each quarter. If you'd rather not, that's exactly what Quarterly Sorted is for.
